I took my daughter, Millie, shopping today and picked up this Lego on a whim. I’ve always liked the look of the bouquets, but wasn’t sure I’d have the patience to build them. I think these will be the perfect thing to keep me occupied this afternoon whilst recovering from a virus that my husband kindly brought home from a weekend away.

I’ve not been this ill in years. It’s been a week, but it feels like much longer and the majority of the time I’ve been in bed/ asleep so I’ll probably only get the daffodils done as I’m still feeling quite discombobulated. They’ll look great when they’re done though.

First stitching finish of the year. I have a few I’m hoping to finish this year.

This is the ‘Apple Blossom Sampler’ by @The Drawn Thread. One of my favourite designers as there are always a range of fun stitches to use that really add to the piece. It’s stitched on Zweitgart fabric in Springfield Sage, a lovely grey/green.

I’m thinking my hoop might have been better than my roller frame for tension, although it’ll straighten out with the mounting.

First finished project of the year. Going to post them this week - there will be another cold snap soon I’m sure.

I’ve decided that this is the year that I sort out my sock knitting ability. I have a weird way of being able to knit patterned socks and somehow they fit, but basic socks are always too tight or baggy somewhere. I’ve measured my feet in a variety of ways and followed many different instructions. I have several amazing books on knitting socks, and had amazing advice from sock knitters but nothing has worked.

However, I recently bought @summer.lee.knits book on sock knitting and something has clicked regarding gauge and amendments. I’m predominantly a sweater knitter, although I’ve knit toys, hats, mittens etc by the bucketload and have never been a particularly tight or loose knitter. In fact I’m one of those annoying people who do swatches and don’t often have to amend much with gauge and needles. However, when I’m knitting socks it looks like I knit with a tight tension to start with and as I knit past the heel my gauge changes and my stitches become looser. As it doesn’t happen with any other knitting I undertake, I hadn’t considered it until reading Summer’s explanation on tight vs loose gauge, and deciding to measure every so often as I knit. I’m currently thinking of changing from my little circulars to magic loop and concentrating on my tension to see if it helps. I really understand heels and gussets so much more now, and how the heel can be changed to help with the fit which is also a help as this is sometimes where I run into fit problems.

There are so many amazing resources out there, but sometimes it just takes one that is worded differently or has a different way of explaining the same thing others do and then you’re on your way. I’m quite excited by the prospect of making lots of basic socks that fit beautifully this year, and that is something I never thought I would say.

The anticipated snow has hit here, and it’s more than I thought it would be. The husband and daughter have gone sledding already and since I don’t function well in the snow I’ll be here to make the hot chocolate later.

My plans are mainly quilting, knitting and stitching with vast quantities of warm tea, and cat cuddles. Lots of cat cuddles.

After stolen moments for crafting over the last few months I am taking today to do some knitting. A very overdue project that is to be a gift so I don’t have to feel to guilty for indulging in a marathon session with chocolate, tea, and the BBC drama Shetland for company.
